What is an Oral and Dental Health Program?
Training professionals equipped with theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of oral and dental health requires a multi-faceted and disciplined approach. In order to train graduates who are preferred, respected, qualified and have reached an international level of knowledge in the field of dental health in the public and private sectors, a competent "Oral and Dental Health" education must be provided.
What are the Qualifications an Oral and Dental Health Technician Should Have?
• To have basic theoretical and practical knowledge about oral and dental health,
• To use computers programs and related technologies related to the field,
• To evaluate the basic level of knowledge and skills acquired in the field with a critical approach, to determine learning needs,
• To be sensitive to the events on the agenda of the society and the world in the field of oral and dental health, to follow the developments, to inform the relevant people and institutions by using the basic knowledge and skills in these matters,
• To contribute in accordance with social, scientific, cultural and ethical values in the stages of collecting, interpreting, applying and announcing the results of data related to the field.
What are the Responsibilities of Oral and Dental Health Technicians?
• Prepares dental units for examination and other procedures, pre-washes the materials used, disinfects and sterilizes surfaces,
• Assisting the physician in examining the patient,
• To provide and prepare the necessary materials according to the treatment method to be applied by the physician, to assist the physician during the treatment procedures,
• To take part in the supply and control of treatment and consumables in the clinic,
• Assisting the dentist in preventive dentistry practices
What are the Courses Learned in the Oral and Dental Health Program?
The courses taught in the Oral and Dental Health Program are Medical Terminology, Basic Microbiology and Sterilization, Oral and Dental Anatomy, Materials and Instruments I and II, Basic Pharmacology, Turkish Language I and II, English I and II, Atatürk's Principles and History of Turkish Revolution I and II, University Culture I and II, Archives and Documentation, Introduction to Clinic and Office Management, Positive Psychology and Communication Skills. The courses taught in the second year are Clinical Practice in Profession I and II (Theory and Practice), Preventive Dentistry, Radiological Applications and Radiation Protection in Dentistry, Infectious Diseases, Sign Language I and II, Elective Course, Professional Ethics. There is a 30-day Summer Internship practice.
What are the Working Areas for Oral and Dental Health Program Graduates?
The data of the Ministry of Health shows that the demand for oral and dental health personnel in our country remains far above the supply. It is estimated that there will be a need for approximately 30,000 dentists in our country in 2023 and the number of dentists will be around 20.00 as of the same period. According to this data, it can be predicted that the demand for oral and dental health personnel will follow a similar course in parallel with the dentist deficit. Graduates of the program benefit from the entire infrastructure of our strong solution partners and are equipped with theoretical and practical knowledge and receive the necessary training to become perfect professionals. Graduates of this department can work in dental laboratories and companies that provide technical equipment related to dental health.
History: The Department of Dentistry Services, established under the Vocational School of Health Services of Iğdır University, was examined in the Higher Education Executive Board meeting dated 26/09/2018 and was established by the Council of Higher Education in accordance with Article 7/d-2 of Law No. 2547, amended by Law No. 2880, and started education in the same year. It has 2 programs. These programs are the Oral and Dental Health Program and the Dental Prosthesis Technology Program. Students have not been accepted to these programs yet.

Double Major / Minor Programs
Double Major Program: Allows students to earn a bachelor's degree in a field they are interested in, in addition to their primary field. In this program, students can complete courses in two different fields and earn a diploma in both fields.
Minor Program: Allows students to take a certain number of courses in a field they are interested in, outside of their major. Students who complete the minor program are given an official certificate in that field; however, this does not mean a second undergraduate degree.

Exchange Program
It offers students the opportunity to study at another university, either domestically or abroad, for a certain period of time. Thanks to these programs, students have the opportunity to learn about different cultures, develop their foreign language skills and gain international academic experience. The most common exchange programs include programs such as Erasmus+, Mevlana and Farabi.

Our program provides its graduates with comprehensive practical training as well as theoretical knowledge, ensuring that they become competent and well-equipped healthcare technicians in their field. Our graduates have the opportunity to work in various healthcare institutions, private clinics and with dentists.
Fields of Study
Graduates of the Oral and Dental Health Program may find work opportunities in the following areas:
- Private and Public Hospitals: They can work as support to dentists in dental health clinics and oral and dental health centers, performing tasks such as sterilization, patient preparation and assisting during treatment.
- Private Dental Clinics: They can work as dental assistants or dental health technicians in private dental clinics. They can be responsible for pre- and post-treatment procedures and clinic hygiene.
- Oral and Dental Health Centers: They can work in oral and dental health centers in the public and private sectors and provide support for patients' dental treatment processes.
- Dental Health Education Centers: They can take part in information and education activities regarding dental health in public or private education centers.
- Academic and Education Sector: Our graduates who complete the relevant undergraduate education may have the opportunity to pursue an academic career; they can work as educators in universities or private educational institutions.
